My vote is to let him go. Mikel is clearly preferred at this point and we also have Miereles, Lampard and Romeu who can play his role. Personally, I like Essien and glad he was able to recover to the point of being able to help us in the run for both trophies last season but he’s not getting any younger and he doesn’t really fill a necessary role. Many teams don’t play with true defensive mids.
